Connecting India

Connecting India

Indian Railways is a state-owned enterprise, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is one of the world's largest railway networks comprising 115,000 km (71,000 mi) of track over a route of 65,000 km (40,000 mi) and 7,500 stations.

This visualization is a humble attempt to visualize the total number of trains that make up this humongous network. The visualization currently displays 735 stations with their connections.

The full dataset can be found here.

Concept by Kenneth and Shweta, students of Information and Interface Design, at National Institute of Design, R & D Campus Bangalore.

The process of this project is documented here.

Updated in 2025:

This visualization was an assignment during our second Information Visualization Module in 2013-14. Back then, our code skills were not enough to make this fully functional. However in 2025, with the help of Claude, we have been able to add the entire data set and get it to work.
